Usage:
Unzip the file and copy the "gmapsupp.img" file to your GPS unit into the "Garmin" subdirectory. You can use an USB cable with the unit in mass storage mode or copy it directly onto the storage card using a card reader. The latter is probably faster.

Your GPS unit must have 1 GB memory or more. The map won't work on units with little memory like the Vista HC (24 MB, no card slot).

The map was tested using a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx.

Here you can see the coverage of the map tiles.

The contour lines are in two separate transparent overlay maps. One ('SRTM20_Germany') contains one contour line every 20 m. This should be good for not overloading the map in mountainous regions. The other one ('SRTM10_Germany') contains additional minor contour lines every 10 m. This is for enhanced precision in flat areas. You can easily switch the layers on and off in the GPS menu (see screenshot 3).

The map supports routing. i.e. the "follow road" option in the GPS menu. This feature is still experimental and not everything is fully implemented yet. See the mkgmap development page for details.

If you want to use my maps with Garmin Mapsource you can split the gmapsupp.img with wgmaptool (get it here) (Use the GUI or run "gmt.exe -S -f 1331 gmapsupp.img"). Then copy the overview map into the destination directory and run "install.bat". The SRTM layers will not be included because they have a different family ID.

NEW: I rebuilt the SRTM layers with newer versions of Srtm2OSM and the mkgmap splitter so there should be fewer bugs. For example the old bug that the splitter didn't support ways which are in more than 4 tiles is solved.

The maps were made with mkgmap version r1065.

There is no guarantee of completeness, accuracy of any kind or fitness for any purpose.

For everyone who wants to make such a map themselves: Here is a small HOWTO instruction on my map making process.

These maps were created using map data from www.openstreetmap.org and height data from SRTM. The license of the map data and therefore the license of the OSM component of the maps is the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0.

Benutzung:
Entpacke die Datei und kopiere die Datei "gmapsupp.img" auf dein GPS-Gerät in das Unterverzeichnis "Garmin". Dafür kannst du ein USB-Kabel verwenden mit dem Gerät im Massenspeicher-Modus oder du kannst direkt auf die Speicherkarte mit Hilfe eines Kartenlesers kopieren. Letztere Methode ist meist schneller.

Das GPS-Gerät muß mindestens 1 GB Speicherplatz haben. Auf Geräten mit wenig Speicher wie z.B. Vista HC (24 MB, kein Speicherkartensteckplatz) funktioniert es nicht.

Ich habe die Karte mit einem Garmin eTrex Legend HCx getestet.

Hier kann man die Abdeckung der Kartenkacheln sehen.

Die Höhenlinien sind in zwei transparenten Overlay-Karten. Eine ('SRTM20_Germany') enthält eine Höhenlinie pro 20 m. Damit wird die Karte in bergigem Gelände nicht zu überfrachtet. Die zweite ('SRTM10_Germany') enthält zusätzliche Höhenlinien alle 10 m. Damit hat man höhere Genauigkeit in flacherem Gelände. Die Layer lassen sie sich leicht im Menü des GPS-Geräts an- und abschalten (Siehe Screenshot 3).

Die Karte unterstützt Routing, d.h. das "Folge Straße" im GPS. Diese Funktion ist noch im Entwicklungsstadium und es wurde noch nicht alles vollständig implementiert. Siehe auch die mkgmap Entwicklerseite.

Um meine Karten mit Garmin Mapsource zu nutzen muß man das gmapsupp.img mit wgmaptool (gibt's hier) in die Einzelteile aufspalten (GUI benutzen oder "gmt.exe -S -f 1331 gmapsupp.img"), die Overview Map in das Verzeichnis kopieren und "install.bat" ausführen. Die Höhenlinien werden dabei nicht kopiert, da sie eine andere Family-ID haben.
Hier gibt es noch eine Anleitung wie man mit mkgmap erzeugte Karten in Mapsource importiert.

NEU: Ich habe die SRTM-Ebenen mit aktuellen Versionen von Srtm2OSM und dem mkgmap-Splitter neu erzeugt, das sollte die Anzahl der Bugs verringern. Beispielsweise wurde der alte Bug im Splitter beseitigt, nach dem ein Way nur in maximal 4 Kacheln sein konnte.

Die Karte wurde mit mkgmap Version r1065 erzeugt.

Ich garantiere nicht für Vollständigkeit, Genauigkeit oder dafür, daß diese Karten für irgendeinen Zweck geeignet sind.

Für alle, die selbst eine solche Karte erstellen möchten: Hier ist eine kleine HOWTO-Anleitung wie ich diese Karten erzeuge.

Diese Karten wurden erzeugt aus Kartendaten von www.openstreetmap.org und Höhendaten von SRTM. Die Lizenz der Kartendaten und daher auch die des OSM-Teils der Karten ist Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0.
